Poem: Gratitude

For sorrows that cleave;
For poverty of spirit and mortified hopes,
For sanguine renunciation and
Outraged acceptance; for forgetful
Refusal and naïve renewal;

For desire that annuls reason
And joy that abolishes pride;
For the holy awe of failure
And the quiver that followed
The arc of her touch;

For sea green eyes that lingered
And the impudence of overcoming;
For the balm of emancipation
And the residue of her departed
Grace—I give thanks.
